5 shots today...sigh

QUESTION for MOMs:

It usually takes 2 hours for the whole trip to the doctors. We wait in the waiting room for 20-30 mins. then the nurse takes us back and does a few things and then we wait for another 20-30 minutes for the doctor to come in. (We really like the doctor---he's young, he's fresh, researched and always asks for second opinions, so its like we get more than one doctor.) Then we are with him for 20-30 minutes. Then we wait for a good 20-30 minutes, sometimes longer, for the nurse to come back and give the immunizations. Then she makes my baby scream (who is already fussy because we've made her not do so many things---ie, crawling on the gross floor with throw-up stains, that are icky in a place where people are regularly sick) with shots---not that she can help it, but it's been such a long wait! Nick is ready to look for another doctor, not because we don't like this one, but it takes up the majority of the morning/afternoon going to this one.

IS THIS NORMAL!? What IS normal?

So I don't have to wait as long, I usually try to get a day when they have first thing in the morning available or first thing after lunch - the second appointment is good too. Then, the doc isn't usually behind. But, I'm kind of an in n' out kinda girl. So, spending 30 mins with the doc is sooo not what I plan on. Get 'em measured, ask my q's and get the shots. I can't think of any time that any appointment has taken longer than an hour at our kids' pediatrician and I love him!

wow. this seems excessive. if it were me, I'd go find another doctor too! but then you have to ask yourself if the doctor really is worth all that time and fuss waiting.

What a pipsqueak!

That does seem like a really long time. Amy has a good idea if you really like the Dr. but if that didn't work and the time bothered you too much, I would look for a new one.

I agree with getting the first appointment of the day or after lunch. Also, tell your doctor about your frustration and that you don't want to change doctors but will have to if you can't make the doctor visit more enjoyable or doable.

next post I think should say, "Question for single people who can only dream of having a family:" and then something creative. Good luck. :)

Another approach to try is to not schedule on on Monday or Friday, because you get people who got sick over the weekend, or trying to get in before the weekend starts. I haven't had luck with after lunch because it can be random, but first thing in the morning works for us. I've never waited as long as you described, but if you like the MD, I'd try the scheduling options first before switching.

Wow that is a long time. I always schedule the earliest appointment I can because my kids are less tired and there have been less sick kids in before me. I am usually there and home again in an hour.

Ask the nurses/receptionist what times are less busy. I agree with Tiffany... the earliest appointment is the best!

I agree with most of what has been said-the earlier the better! If you were in Salt Lake I would recommend our pediatrician (Dr. Moskowitz, or to the kids Dr. Pete!) He is sincerely fabulous!

In my experience, this is pretty normal. I feel like I'm waiting alllll day long (at my OB's office too). I kinda figure it's just how dr's offices are, unfortunately.
